The national data opt-out service was introduced in May 2018. It enables patients to stop their confidential, identifiable information being used for research or planning purposes. The change is a result of the recommendations set out in the Review of Data Security, Consent and Opt-Outs by the National Data Guardian.
Previous to May 2018 there were two ways in which a patient could opt out of sharing their personal information these were:
The national data opt-out has replaced the Type 2 opt-out. By 31st March 2022 all health and care organisations are required to be compliant with the national data opt-out policy.
